The UKVI considers fee waiver applications on a case-by-case basis. Here are some general situations where you might be eligible:

    • Financial hardship: You can demonstrate genuine financial difficulty that prevents you from paying the visa fee. This could be due to low income, unemployment, or unexpected expenses.
    • Vulnerable applicant: You are a child, a victim of human trafficking, or require a visa for essential medical treatment.
    • Public Interest: Your visit to the UK aligns with significant public interest, for example, attending a conference that benefits the UK or collaborating on a research project.

How to Apply for a Fee Waiver in the UK

The UKVI prefers applications for fee waivers to be submitted online alongside your visa application. However, you can also submit a written request if online submission is not possible.

    • Online Application: During the online visa application process, you will encounter a section dedicated to fee waivers. Carefully follow the instructions and provide all the necessary details.
    • Written Request: Download the “Visa Application and Information Form” (form VAF1) from the UKVI website and complete section 6, indicating your request for a fee waiver. Submit the completed form along with your visa application and supporting documents.

    Required Documents

    • Proof of your financial hardship (bank statements, payslips, etc.)
    • Supporting documentation for your reason for a fee waiver (e.g., medical records, conference invitation letter)

    Review Process

The UKVI will review your fee waiver application alongside your visa application. The decision can take several weeks. They will consider the information you provide and assess your financial situation or the public interest justification for your visit.

    Appeal Process

If your fee waiver application is rejected, you can submit an appeal within 28 days of receiving the decision. You will need to provide additional information to support your appeal.
